In August I was made aware of the Words N Pictures Comic Jam. The prizes were enticing and I thought I had a good shot at winning one of the prizes. So let’s see how I did!
Concept
Bubbles. that’s our theme. I thought of different kinds of bubbles and well, here are some of my thoughts.
I did a little bit of a mind map to figure out what I wanted to include in my comic. I kept it pretty simple as I wanted to move on to design and sketching the pages as soon as possible.
Sketches
Now we get into the sketches!
I wanted to make a young mage but not so wizard-y. Trying to keep in mind the motifs of bubbles and how to make her set to trek into a swamp.
I kept these real fast and loose. Sometimes I don’t write a script until I draw it. It keeps things snappy and it’s nice to see if what I want to say will work on the page rather than just in text.

OUTCOME
So I didn’t win any of the prizes. Oh well. At least I made something! It was nice to take a bit of a break from what I had been doing because I have been working on only projects that have been going on for far too long haha.
I hope everyone participating in the Comic Jam had a good time making comics and I also hope everyone had a great time reading all the comics!
THOUGHTS
I spent about an hour figuring out the story, an hour on thumbnails, 3-4 hours drawing things completely. So all in all, about 6 hours of work. I tried out some coloring stuff that I don’t usually do, more gradients and a little more shading than usual.
I love the idea of an enchanted rubber ducky so I might put that one in my back pocket for later. The story is straightforward and I wanted to get across some fun ideas quickly. It wasn’t the most in depth or personal comic I’ve ever done, but I’m pleased with how it turned out.
